RISE 2018: Cultivating Collective Transformation
March 14, 2018 5pm-7pm, Anna Head Alumnae Hall

RISE: Celebrating Women, Community Love and Leadership, is an event for all women to unapologetically celebrate and honor the work and contributions given by women to our communities. RISE is about highlighting the endeavors and efforts of our women leaders, especially queer, trans, Black, brown and indigenous women, as well as appreciating, as a community, the daily functioning, striving and travail of all women as we give to each others’ lives and rise together.

This year’s theme, Cultivating Collective Transformation, calls into the space the life, legacy, and work of Octavia Butler. The visioning for this year’s RISE began from Butler’s seminal work Parable of the Sower, and the Earthseed verses contained within the text. One verse in particular served as a point of entry into the ideas and feelings which informed this concept:

All that you touch
You Change.
All that you Change
Changes you.
The only lasting truth
Is Change.
God
Is Change.
∞ = Δ
As we celebrate women’s community love and leadership, we honor Octavia Butler and the lineages and legacies of work which she has made possible. Octavia reminds us of the multiplicity of ways in which we transform and are transformed by the people we engage with and the spaces we inhabit. It is this transformation and adaptability to change which allows us to survive and thrive even when faced with intense violence. Octavia teaches us to hold our visions for new kinds of worlds not as distant futures but as taking shape in our present. We ground ourselves not only in the words of Octavia, but in the values which she has offered us and the lessons she has taught us.
The event will include a formal dinner and an award ceremony honoring campus and community women, as well as performances and speakers throughout.

We welcome all who experience life through the lens of woman in body, spirit, identity - past, present, future, and fluid.

RISE: Celebrating Women, Community Love and Leadership, is an event for all women to unapologetically celebrate and honor the work and contributions given by women to our communities. RISE is about highlighting the endeavors and efforts of our women leaders, especially queer women and women of color, as well as appreciating, as a community, the daily functioning, striving and travail of all women as we give to each others lives and rise together.

About our theme:
Although many saw O’Keefe’s revolutionary flower paintings as representative of the female experience with a connotation of biological determinism, at the core, her flowers were beautiful no matter what the viewer chose to project onto them when reading into her work. Every woman is different, just as all flowers are different, and we want to acknowledge and celebrate all who experience life through the lens of woman in body, spirit, identity - past, present, future, and fluid.
In the past decades, new emerging gazes have continually added diverse meanings to her works. By acknowledging the past understandings of her work and following the innovating legacy, in saying "No Matter the Flower", we seek to explore the transformative power brought by members in our communities who embrace and traverse new consciousness, boundaries and identities, take initiatives, and keep re-defining themselves, the community, and women’s leadership.

The event will include a dinner and an award ceremony honoring campus and community women, as well as performances and speakers throughout. Please join us! Everyone welcome!

We welcome all who experience life through the lens of woman in body, spirit, identity - past, present, future, and fluid.

RISE! Celebrating Women, Community Love and Leadership (Inaugural, 2015)

Flower with RISE Info 2015

RISE is an event created by Berkeley women to create a space for all women to unapologetically celebrate and honor the work and contributions given by women to our communities. RISE is about highlighting the endeavors and efforts of our women leaders as well as appreciating, as a community, the daily functioning, striving and travail of all women as we give to each others lives and rise together.

There are many definitions of the word rise, our favorites being “to become active in opposition or resistance, revolt or rebel”, “to come into existence, appear”, “to advance to a higher level of action, thought, feeling” or if we define it by its synonyms to rise is to accelerate, advance, grow, surge, or breakthrough. Women have been rising for years out of a need to survive, a desire to thrive, and a will to give to the future of women. March 16th we say thank you.
